Datsun GO Exterior & Style

On the face of it, it might look that the car has not given any update unless there isn’t the new orange colour option in the view. The overall looks have been drastically enhanced and the car can easily grab attention at first sight. And the primary reason for that is the addition of new 14-inch diamond cut alloy wheels which replaced the older steel ones and also feature wider rubber, providing the car an improved stance. The tiny wheels on the earlier model make the car looked comical. The ORVM gets body colour treatment in the update which is a nice move.

At the front, the changes are minors. The car gets solid dab of chrome, larger grille and revamped bumper with more prominent creases. Apart from this, the bonnet remains sculpted while the large headlamps are identical as well. The rear as against the front end, looks a bit sedate. The carmaker could have included a neat spoiler, however, you still get revised bumper which now houses parking sensors, rear wash wiper and chrome strip at the bottom of the boot lid. Kudos to the carmaker, it has now addressed the feedbacks coming from all the quarters. The earlier model was launched barebones and this has changed quite a lot with the newer version. Even the basics have been given importance this time around. What this means is that the twist and pull handbrake has been replaced by a conventional stick we are all used to. The instrument cluster has been updated incorporating a larger analogue tachometer in the display. This is especially important because the older setup makes it hard to determine the revs. Besides, the instrument shows information including digital clock, dual tripmeter, engine running time and average speed of the vehicle.

The plastics used in the newer model is improved yet not of high standard, but we can’t complain much given the price point of the car. The dashboard in the all-black cabin has also been restyled. The treat to the eyes lies at the center console in the form of 7-inch touchscreen infotainment that is powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Coming to the comfort and space, the biggest miss in the car is perhaps the non-adjustable headrests. While if you are sitting at the front, you would not complain about the lack of headrests, however, the rear passengers are likely to complain. And for the taller passengers, the integrated headrests will be at the shoulder level, which would be practically unusable for them.

In terms of space, there is nothing special to differentiate between the older and newer model, it’s identical. Datsun GO is known for its space, especially at the rear and it is perfect for a small family. Three adult passengers can easily fit at the rear as oppose to Celerio and Wagon R. However, the middle occupant would not get much legroom, so the car should be better be perceived as a perfect 4-seater. Talking about the boot space, the 265L is still class leading which is one of the USPs of this car. Apart from this, there are several utility storages across the vehicles including the door pads, central floor console and at the rear. Overall, the interiors have been a nice overall package.

Datsun GO Engine & Transmission

The Datsun GO specifications include a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol unit, which makes a maximum power of 67 bhp against the top torque of 104 Nm. Transmission duties are carried out by the conventional 5-speed manual gearbox. The spec sheet remains the same as before. The car comes powered with the same 1.2L 3-cylinder naturally aspirated 12V DOHC EFI petrol engine that produces 68PS and 104Nm of peak torque with the same 5-speed manual transmission doing its duty for transferring the power to the front wheels. This is the same unit that powers Nissan Micra Active and remains the biggest in its class in terms of power and performance.

The engine remains enthusiastic as before with high power to weight ratio. The hatch offers peppy and fun to drive experience especially if the engine is dragged to its redline. A small hitch comes due to limited low-rpm pulling potential. So, one has to really push the accelerator a little hard to get going. But this is something of advantage when you are travelling jam packed or handling the ghats. If you continue to get going, you would not face any problems whizzing in and out of the traffic.

However, the newer model is not as quick as compared to the previous version. Why? Because of the added 150kg of weight and on open stretches the car would run out of breath. And here you would need to plan overtake in advance. But there is nothing to worry much as these cars are meant for pottering within the city premises. Coming to the NVH levels, the carmaker seems to have taken the nasty feedbacks seriously. The engine sound is muffled right to some extent but it does get thrummy if you push it hard. The refinement levels in the facelift has been bettered, there is more cladding so those small pebbles and stones hitting the underbody are now better controlled.

The Datsun GO is powered by the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine and is available with a manual unit.
