In the global market, the Suzuki Swift is also known as “Pocket Rocket” model for the company. Nevertheless, though the model already has a waiting period of several months, this does not mean that the company is resting on its laurels. The company is now working on a new Swift and, in fact, the Suzuki Swift 2011 has already been spied testing in Germany.
Currently, the fifth generation model of Suzuki Swift has been on sale in the international market since 2004. It is available as three-door and five-door variant in the international market. It is powered by 1.3L, 1.5L or 1.6L four-cylinder engines. The 1.6L engine produces power of 125 bhp and 148 nm of torque. The front wheel drive option comes as standard but some of the Japanese models also have four-wheel drive options. The Swift’s party trick has always been its chic looks. With the new generation, Maruti Suzuki hasn’t fiddled around with the recipe a lot. That explains why it looks more evolutionary, than revolutionary. If one zips past you, there’s no mistaking it for anything else. Even though the Swift is practically everywhere, it still possesses the ability to turn heads. The design is simple, but most importantly – well executed.The second avatar of the hatch follows the same recipe. It has a longish nose, and a stubby posterior. The face now has a more mature air to it. The headlamps have grown bigger in size, and so has the trademark Suzuki grille. The air-dam too, is a tad more prominent flanked by foglamps on either side. And, while international variants of the Swift get daytime running lamps integrated into the housing, the Indian version makes do with a matte-silver accent piece instead. An opportunity missed? We think so!
Over to the side, the quintessential Swift design trait – the blacked-out A-pillar – instantly grabs attention. It gives the hatch its trademark ‘floating roof’ effect, which does give it a sporty character. The profile is where you realize that the designers have played it safe with the update. There isn’t anything radically different from the older generation. It features a strong shoulder line, and the wheels are pushed out all the way to the edges to give it extremely short overhangs. We also like how the window line swoops upwards towards the C-pillar. The pronounced wheel arches are filled up by a set of lovely 15-inch alloy wheels that give the Swift a nice, sporty stance.
The rear features the same ‘waterfall’ theme taillamps, that flow over onto the side. The design, much like the headlamps has been sharpened, and the lamps have been pushed towards the fringes, that makes the Swift look wider than it actually is. This has also resulted in the mouth of the boot being larger, making it easier to load in the luggage. The large bumper takes up most of the real estate at the rear, and the exhaust tip is neatly hidden away from view. Atop the sharply raked rear windscreen, sits a well-integrated lip spoiler that houses the high-mount stop lamp. The rear foglamp is tucked away near the base of the bumper. In spite of Maruti Suzuki choosing the middle path with the looks, it is among the few cars that most agree looks good. The new generation keeps the essence of the Swift intact, which appeals to old and young alike.
Get inside the car, and you will notice rich upholstery and all-black interiors. With an extended cabin area, there is a good knee space for rear passengers to make long drives enjoyable. However, the boot space remains unchanged and may bother you if you are looking for more luggage area. The black styling gives it a stylish and sophisticated visual appeal.
The elegant silver-painted door garnish, door trim fabric and door opener add more to the car’s appeal. The other features include digital display trip meter, rich dashboard with integrated cup holder and waterfall console, chromed door handles, LCD display, speedometer cluster, automatic climate control, single touch lane indicator, sun visor, anti-glare inside rear view mirror, and more. Coming to the drivetrain the Japanese spec Swift hatchback gets 1.2 Litre petrol motor which you will find under the hood of the base variant. This engine is capable of producing of 67 Ps and 118 Nm of torque. The mid variant too is powered by the same engine available in different state of tune, the same engine produces about 70 Ps of peak power and 170 Nm of torque. While the top end variant gets slightly more powerful 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder motor which is capable of producing about 101 Ps of peak power. All the above engines are paired to either a 5 speed manual transmission or a CVT unit.
For the Indian market the Swift hatchback will most probably get the same 1.2 Litre petrol motor which powers the present Swift hatchback while the diesel variant will continue with the same 1.3 Litre motor which will be tuned to deliver slightly more power and torque output. However Maruti might introduce a slightly more powerful diesel unit as well which will replace the ageing 1.3 Litre mill. Some reports also states that the Indian spec Swift hatchback will get an automatic transmission with both diesel and petrol drivetrains this time.
DRIVING DYNAMICS ;
The Maruti Swift has excellent handling and really eggs you to push hard, if you love driving of course. Because among the sea of Swifts you see on the road, most buy it for the Maruti badge and not for having fun behind the wheel. There are no changes to the dynamics of the Swift, so it continues to offer fun handling, decent ride quality (nowhere close to the segment benchmark) and an excellent steering wheel which is light at low speeds but weighs up brilliantly at high speeds, being high on feel and feedback. Braking performance is decent but even the wide but poor quality tyres on the Z trims don’t offer enough grip for surefooted stopping or hard cornering.
SAFETY FEATURES ;
Standard safety provisions across line-up include 3-point ELR front seat belts, rear seat belts, rear door child locks, front head restraint, dual horn, high mounted stop lamp, side door impact beams and iCats. Eminent safety equipment available exclusively on the top-spec variant are reverse parking sensor, new generation anti-lock-braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, airbags in front for driver and co-passenger. Of these features, ABS with EBD and brake assist is available exquisitely on the VDi trims while giving a miss to the petrol variants.
Electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors are standard on mid and high end trims save for the base variant which gets manually adjustable ORVMs. Similarly, side turn indicators are missing in the base trim. Front windshield gets two-speed intermittent wipers. Cabin features sporty wraparound door trims highlighted by a hint of chrome. Other features like day and night inside rear view mirror, three-spoke steering wheel, high volume glove-box, parcel shelf, inside chrome door handles etc are stuffed in the cabin. The instrument panel features tachometer, reminder is provided for driver’s seat/light off/key-off and warning for door closure/low fuel.
