Renault Kwid 2018 Exterior
The Renault Kwid has been designed to be bold and muscular in appearance. It has all the SUV-ish traits, like a butch bonnet, black cladding on the wheel arches and a bold stance. If you look at the Renault Kwid images, you wouldn’t think it to be a mini car at the first glance. However, despite the extra bit of black cladding everywhere, the bumpers are body coloured. The body size is small and rides on 13-inch wheels. The mini-hatchback is offered in a total of five colour options – Moonlight Silver, Fiery red, Outback Bronze, Ice Cool White and Planet Grey.
The Kwid base model gets black plastic claddings on the front chambered front grille and black colour ORVMs along with plastic door handles. However, the top-end variant gets additional chrome inserts in places like the fog lamp surrounds and on the front grille. The door also gets chrome handles.
Renault Kwid 2018 Interiors
The interiors of the Kwid Easy-R are ditto as well. However, the rotary dial for the AMT gearbox is placed on the dashboard below the AC controls. Instead of the conventional gear lever position, Renault is offering some storage space for your phone or some knick knacks. Though the rotary knob position is convenient to operate, some uninformed users might mistake it as one of the AC control knobs. However, the transmission doesn’t respond to the rotary inputs without pressing the brakes. If you do that, the instrument cluster shows up a warning to press the brake. The features remain the same including the touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity, digital speedometer, keyless entry, etc. The Kwid offers a spacious cabin with a sizeable boot of 300-litres capacity.
Renault Kwid 2018 Engine & Gearbox
Powering the Renault Kwid AMT is a 3-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol motor that produces 67 BHP at 5500 RPM and 91 Nm at 4250 RPM. This engine feels refined and much more lively than the 800cc unit. It offers a strong mid-range along with a tractable top-end. The AMT gearbox is very well calibrated to this engine and offers sharp throttle response as soon as you hit the gas. Yes, there is that typical AMT pause between gearshifts but immediate throttle response makes it up for the lag between shifts.
The first two gears will give you head knock between shifts but it smoothens up as you climb up the gears. Part throttle input offers smooth and early shifts, pin the pedal down and it takes a short pause to downshift and then redlines each gear until full throttle is applied. 0-100 km/hr takes 17.26 seconds as per our VBOX tests. You need to plan your overtakes accordingly. Sadly, unlike other AMT cars, the Kwid doesn’t offer manual mode. There is no creep function in the Kwid AMT, so it rolls back on slopes and you need to throttle it out and if the slope is too steep, you need to apply the handbrake technique.
Renault Kwid 2018 Ride and Handling
Truly, the Renault Kwid 2018 impresses in many ways and that includes the ride and handling. It maintains Renault’s legacy of a fantastic ride quality, similar to what we have seen in the Duster and Lodgy as well. The potholes are not much of a bother when you are behind the wheel of the Kwid. Yes, it glides over them. The handling is something unseen in this segment and the Renault Kwid 2018 can put to shame many a cars from higher segments too. The steering is well weighted, not too light or heavy either and the feedback is quite precise.
Renault Kwid 2018 Braking & Safety
Going by the price of the Renault Kwid car, the safety features are quite ample. The car gets disc brakes on the front wheels and drums at the rear. Other safety features include speed sensing door lock, engine immobiliser, child safety lock and seat belt warning. However, car ranks mediocre in terms of safety as there are no ABS and EBD (electronic brake-force distribution). Hence, drive in the monsoon weather with caution.
The base variant of the Kwid gets seat belt warning only, while the top-end variant gets a single airbag (driver only) and seat belt warning.
Renault Kwid 2018 Verdict
With the gradual release of new Kwid variants, Renault has upped their game in the small car segment. The 800cc Kwid is a desirable hatch with SUV styling, the 1.0-litre version offers strong performance that matches the appearance of the Kwid while the AMT version now makes it a super convenient package for the first time car buyers. The AMT gearbox works very well and the Kwid Easy-R makes perfect sense to buy amongst its rivals.
