Tata Tiago Overview

The Tiago was a major milestone for Tata Motors as, in a way, it gave the company what it needed the most– a new recall value, something that could be a worthy successor of the Indica. Ever since its launch, the Tata Tiago has not only managed to gain good traction in the Indian market but also managed to keep the momentum going and have the sales counter of the Indian automaker ringing. The demand for the car was such that Tata also came out with an AMT-equipped variant and a sportier ‘Wizz’ edition.

Tata Tiago

When we reviewed the Tata Tiago after its launch last year, we were left impressed. Undoubtedly, the best-ever small car built by Tata had a lot of boxes ticked in our checklist but the real competition for the Tiago was carving a space for itself in the fiercely competitive segment. The car does manage to leave a great first impression but what is left to see, is how it performs when someone has had this car for a long period of time. Does it manage to be a good value for money car by being a no-hassle hatchback? That’s what we have set to find out. Tata Tiago in Tryaldrive

Tata Tiago Exterior & Style

Tata Motors has designed the Tiago with utmost diligence and have kept in mind that it is distinctly different than the Indica, but has even retained the essence and utility. It is not too sane (like the Indica was) nor too curvy (something like the Hyundai Eon is). In fact, it is the right mix of simpleness and boldness and this is where the Impact design language comes into the picture.

Right from the time the Tata Tiago images have surfaced (much before the launch), there has been a great anticipation with the hatch. It has a wide mesh grille in the front section that flows into the swept back headlamps on either side. The lip spoiler holds the circular-shaped fog lamps. The side section of the car gets body-coloured door handles and ORVMs with turn indicators installed on them. There are a couple of defining character lines on both the sides, with one of them passing across through the door handles. The car rides on 13-inch alloy wheels.

The rear portion is modern and houses wraparound but small tail light clusters and roof spoiler. The registration number plate is attached to the lower bumper and not at the tailgate. A total of six colour options are available. But out of all the Tata Tiago colours, the Peppy Orange may be the best

Tata Tiago Interior & Space

The real surprise lies inside, Tata has worked really well in terms of design, finish, fit and comfort. The quality of plastic used in the cabin is top-notch which altogether leaves a good impression. The two-toned dashboard is designed well, however the highlight remains the wide centre console which is separated in two parts, the upper one features air con vents & infotainment system and the lower part features temperature dials. There is also a small shelf for storage beneath temperature dials, two cup holders on floor console and one bottle holder on all doors. Instrument cluster gets two large dials and the three spoke steering wheel has been borrowed from Zest and Bolt. The hatchback scores well on space front and as mentioned above there are ample storage points too. Luggage compartment is quite large at 242 litres which can further be increased by folding rear seats.

Features such as new radiator grille in front, new tail lamps enclosures, integrated rear spoiler, dual tone interior theme, new dashboard integrated console, electronically adjustable outside rear view mirrors style the contemporary exterior. Inside the cabin, the car gets 3-spoke steering wheel borrowed from Zest/Bolt, cup holders, bottle holders, door pockets, LED fuel and temperature gauge, driver information system with digital clock, gear shift display, 2 trip meters, average fuel economy, distance to empty among several others.

The Tiago is powerful and that is evident by the top speed that it can hit. At full throttle, the car can hit a top speed of up to 150 km/hour and can do the 0-100 km/hour round in just 13 seconds, thanks to the abundant amount of power and torque on offer. The AMT unit is a delight to drive and the conversion is smooth. But the best part is, the Tiago does not let you down on a bad road, as the front wheel is suspended over MacPherson Strut while the rear wheels are done on twist beams. The car also gets the “Creep” function, which makes it move slowly as soon as the brake is released. This helps a lot while you are stuck in traffic at the inclination of a bridge and working with the clutch, brake and accelerator simultaneously becomes a little tricky.

Based on the Tata Tiago price, the car has a good range of features on offer. It is extremely efficient but powerful too, something that most of its competitors are low on. Even the AMT gearbox unit is smooth to drive and does not get any hiccups along the way. Moreover, the car ranks high on fuel efficiency and will save you loads on fuel bills, for sure. Even the automatic transmission variant is equally efficient as the manual, something that is not very common among contemporary cars.
