The Toyota Etios has always been known for its practical, reliable and efficient nature but the sedan has never been known for its sales in the private segment. Toyota Etios Look
Compared to the outgoing model, the new Toyota Etios Platinum do pose an appealing stance. Updates can be seen at the front with the new wider bumper and revised grille to give a touch of sportiness. The carmaker hasn’t gone extreme when it comes to using chrome appliques. The use of carbon-fibre texture, in fact, looks really nice on the front bumper. The v-shaped grille is mounted high with black inserts and the chrome studded signature mark at the centre looks cool. The rounded fog lamps now get boomerang styled highlighted enclosure.
The side profile of Etios largely remains intact except the new set of alloys and the same thick protruding strip running in the middle. The rear end of the car feature new bumper and thick chrome slat with red reflectors on the boot lid connecting the two tail lamps. Overall, the changes are subtle but do provide a bit of youthful touch to the car.

The interiors of the new Etios are undoubtedly a notch above the outgoing one. The earlier version was unusually equipped with instrument binnacle placed on the top of the centre console. It was annoying for many people as they cannot see the information without road distraction. Though the new one also gets the same unit, they now feature semi-digital combi-meter display for the convenience of the driver. The car gets new black-ivory colour scheme while the styling of the rest of the dashboard remains identical to the outgoing version. The large windows and the beige upholstery inside makes the cabin looks bigger and roomier.
The sedan is a proper 5-seater and the legroom is amongst the best you can have under Rs. 10 lakh car. The seats are large and comfortable while one will also notice the alteration in the texture of the seat fabric. However, the use of rough plastic, especially the bottom of the dashboard seems to be really out of place. The carmaker has added a central armrest for more comfort. But, the addition of features such as automatic climate control, multi-information display and rear ac vents would have really boosted its image among the class.
Among the plus points of the car, ingress and outgress is amazing while the height adjust functionality and tilt-adjustable steering making the driving position more comfortable. The storage space is also abundant with plenty of cubby holes and bottle holders across the cabin. The infotainment system is still limited to the 2-Din audio system with Bluetooth and USB which is again a disadvantage given the budget cars are also coming up with touchscreen units.
Toyota Etios Transmission
Very few changes have been made to the mechanicals of the Etios. The petrol engine is a 1.5-litre unit producing 90 PS of power and 132 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine has good drivability in the city but it seems to run out of breath on the highways or at higher RPMs. Fuel efficiency from the petrol engine is also just about average. However, it has always been the diesel engine which has been fetching sales for Toyota. The 1.4-litre D-4D engine churns out 68 PS and 170 Nm and performance is very good. Power delivery is linear and turbo lag is negligible. The mid-range feels very strong and the car pulls nicely. While straight line acceleration isn’t the best, in-gear acceleration is very good and that will satisfy buyers. The 5-speed gearbox isn’t buttery smooth though and takes a mild effort to change gears. To make things easier, Toyota has made the clutch lighter this time around. Also, the clatter from the engine has been reduced thanks to better insulation on the car. The rubber mounts have also been replaced by hydraulic mounts, thus improving the NVH levels.
